How to Select the Right Fly Fishing Rod for Houston area fly fishing.
There are many factors that go into choosing the right fly rod. One of the first things that you need to consider is what species you will be fishing for and in what setting. In Houston, you will mostly be fishing for bass in freshwater and redfish in saltwater.
You also need to consider the action of the rod. The shaft of fly rods are made up of what are called a “blanks.” Most blanks are made of graphite these days. Each of these blanks has an action that is either: light, medium, medium/ heavy, or heavy. The upper portion will also have an action that is either: extra light, light, or regular. You should cast different rods to figure out which action you feel most comfortable with.
You also need to consider the price that you can afford. If you are a real serious fly fisherman than you might want to invest in something special such as the Sage Z Axis or Sage Launch. It really doesn’t matter. As long as you can catch fish with it you will do great!
